Mindy Klowden contributed to a newly-released article in Psychiatry Times, entitled “State-Level Analysis of Access to Intensive Eating Disorder Care for Medicaid Beneficiaries.” The article presents a state-level analysis of access to intensive eating disorder (ED) treatment services across the United States, highlighting significant geographic and policy-driven disparities in care. It uses comprehensive data to map how availability of specialized ED treatment, including residential and outpatient programs, varies widely by state and region. The researchers found that many states lack sufficient intensive treatment options, leaving individuals with severe eating disorders underserved or forced to travel long distances for care. Structural factors — such as Medicaid coverage policies, state insurance mandates, and availability of qualified providers — were identified as key determinants of access inequities. States with more robust policy frameworks and funding support tend to offer better access to high-level ED care, while others lag far behind. The analysis underscores how these gaps contribute to delays in treatment and poorer clinical outcomes for individuals with eating disorders. Third Horizon Strategies contributed expertise or data support for the research, helping contextualize policy and access issues at the state level. The findings call for targeted policy interventions and increased investment in ED treatment infrastructure to reduce disparities and improve outcomes. Overall, the study provides an important evidence base for clinicians, policymakers, and advocates aiming to expand equitable access to intensive eating disorder care nationwide.
